How to read your dog, part by part

Ears, eyes, tail, mouth, posture — each part of your dog is saying something. Read them together and your dog's everyday behavior starts to make sense.

Dogs communicate with their whole body, all the time. The trick isn't memorizing a single chart — it's learning to read several signals at once and match them to what's happening around your dog. Start with the parts below, then practice reading the whole dog.

Ears

What the ears reveal

Ears move fast and constantly — they're one of the quickest reads on a dog's mood.

  • Forward & high: alert, interested, possibly aroused
  • Neutral & relaxed: calm and comfortable
  • Pinned back & low: worried, appeasing, or unsure

Eyes

Soft eyes vs. hard eyes

The eyes shift with emotion long before the body does.

  • Soft, blinking, almond-shaped: relaxed
  • Hard stare, dilated pupils: tension or fixation
  • Whale eye (whites showing): discomfort

Tail

Beyond 'a wag means happy'

Tail position and motion carry more meaning than most owners realize.

  • High & stiff wag: arousal, not always friendly
  • Mid-height loose wag: relaxed and social
  • Low or tucked: nervous, unsure, or submissive

Mouth

Reading the mouth

A dog's mouth shows tension shifts in real time.

  • Loose, slightly open, 'smiling': relaxed
  • Closed & tight: focused or tense
  • Lip licks & yawns: low-level stress

Posture

Weight & shape

Where a dog puts its weight tells you whether it wants in or out.

  • Weight forward: confident or interested
  • Weight back / lowered: cautious or fearful
  • Frozen & stiff: overwhelmed

The Whole Dog

Read the cluster, not the part

No single signal means much alone — context and combinations are everything.

  • Match signals to the situation
  • Look for several cues agreeing
  • When in doubt, give space and watch
